Licensed Engineering Geologist / Geotechnical Engineer
Licensed Engineering Geologist / Geotechnical Engineer
Campbell or Capitola, California
Why C2Earth is more than just a job
Imagine working at a firm that combines technical rigor, real-world impact, and deep respect for place. That's C2Earth. We're a privately held, majority Black-owned small business doing thoughtful, problem-solving engineering geology and geotechnical work throughout the greater San Francisco and Monterey Bay areas.
At C2Earth, you'll inherit a legacy: the reputation of Upp Geotechnology (founded in 1983) plus the innovative spark and commitment brought by our founders, Craig Reid and Chris Hundemer. We're more than "consultants" -- we're advisors, protectors, and enablers. Our work touches everything from safety (schools, hospitals, essential buildings) to beauty (coastal bluffs, parks) to infrastructure that supports thriving communities.
When you join us, you join a team with decades of combined experience, with project files going back to the early 1980s. We've seen it all -- small residential additions, complex slope stabilization, liquefaction hazards, coastal erosion, distressed buildings, and critical infrastructure. Whether it's solving for a retaining wall, a foundation, or a bluff subject to sea level rise, we don't just do the work -- we do it with care, precision, and purpose.
The Role: What You'll Do
- Lead investigations of subsurface and geologic hazards, including slope stability, landslides, fault rupture, liquefaction, coastal bluff erosion, and debris flow.
- Design foundations, retaining walls, earthworks, ground improvements, drainage, and other structures sensitive to soil and rock behavior.
- Analyze field and laboratory data, interpret geologic history, and develop recommendations that are safe, constructable, and cost-effective.
- Support projects through both design and construction phases, including plan reviews, construction observation, monitoring, and peer review to ensure field conditions align with assumptions.
- Mentor junior staff, contribute to a collaborative team culture, and help uphold the technical standards our clients expect.
Why You'll Love Working Here
Impact & Variety: From small residential projects to large public infrastructure or essential buildings, you'll face a wide range of challenges that keep you learning.
Small Enough to Matter, Big Enough to Deliver: As a small-business, your contributions are visible and valued. You'll often be more than just a cog -- you'll lead, you'll shape, you'll see the outcome.
Professional Growth: You'll be surrounded by licensed professionals with strong backgrounds. Mentorship is built in.
Integrity & Client Focus: We don't cut corners. We value doing the right thing -- high-quality technical work, responsiveness, timelines, and balancing safety, cost, and constructability.
A Culture of Ownership & Respect: As a minority-owned firm, there's a sense of mission and responsibility in how we show up -- to our clients, our staff, and the land.
What We're Looking For
- A current California license as an Engineering Geologist or Geotechnical Engineer (or both).
- Strong experience in both field and office work: investigations, mapping, lab work, report writing, and data interpretation.
- Solid understanding of California's regulatory requirements related to geologic hazards, faulting, liquefaction, and related areas.
- Sound judgment, creativity, and strong communication skills to collaborate with engineers, architects, contractors, clients, and agencies.
- Bonus: experience with specialized software and tools relevant to slope stability, ground improvement, rockfall simulations, or coastal bluff modeling.
Perks & Practical Info
Location: Based in Campbell (San Francisco Bay Area) with a second office in Capitola serving Santa Cruz and Monterey Bay.
Compensation: Competitive salary and benefits package.
Flexibility: Opportunities for a mix of field and office work with room for balance.
Growth: Professional development support and the chance to build your own areas of specialization.
Project Diversity: Work on technically interesting, socially important, and geographically varied sites.
